Most Common Acculturation

Image result for imperialism

We studied 4 types of acculturation in this unit: Accommodation, Assimilation, Annihilation, and Segregation.  We also looked at a few examples of colonization and the acculturation that occurred in these cases.  What would you say would be the most common type of acculturation that occurred during the Imperialism Age of when colonization was at its peak?  Give a brief explanation that supports your opinion.

  1. I think that the most common form of acculturation used during the Age of Imperialism was annihilation, though many people of the time might have called it "aggressive" assimilation. The Europeans did not want people to keep their own cultures because they interfered with the culture and plans that the Europeans had. An example of annihilation would be the residential schools that occurred not only in Canada but all over the world. The Europeans pushed people off their lands and would only help people if they assimilated to their culture. Sometimes people were even killed, like on the Trail of Tears or in wars over lands that natives already owned. Though many of the things that were done could be filed under assimilation, the circumstances under which people were forced to do so actually make it annihilation.

  3. The most common acculturation that happened would most likley be annihilation. I believ this is the most common one because when Britain was attempting to control the others countrys around them, they did not think about the people that already lived in that country. Britain did not think for one minute that the people in their country's did'nt want to be colonized by Britain and that they were fine being their own culture. When countries denied that's when Britain would begin to annihilate their culture, language and everyday lifestyle. They enforced christianity, the english language, and anything else that ended up disrupting and sometimes destroying a culture. For example when Residential Schools were put in place the First Nation identity was wiped away by cutting their hair, forcing them, to dress like them as well as calling them numbers instead of their names.

  4. I would say that the most common type of acculturation that occured during the Imperial age would be accomodation and assimilation when colonization was at its peak but then led to annihilation eventually.Accomodation and assimilation was the most common type of aculturation during this time because when they first came over here the people that were here were being accomodating to those who came over because the ones who came over had no clue how to live off the land so they "helped a brother out" and helped them out and then it went to assimilation because the people that were here liked parts of the people that came heres culture and the people that came here liked the peoples culture that were here before them so they took parts of each culture to make a culture of there own/in other words they pulled a hannah montana to make the best and take the best out of each culture
